Preventing Falls, Room by Room

Living Room-

Remove any clutter from pathways.

Keep electrical cords out of walkways.

Arrange all furniture so there are direct walkways to adjoining rooms.

Make sure all furniture that is used is high enough to get in and out of easily.

Remove all mats and rugs.

Bedroom-

Make sure the bed is at an appropriate height to get into and out of easily.

Linens should be a non-slick material such as wool or cotton, stay away from satin.

Keep the floor debris free.

Install nightlights.

Bathroom-

Install anti-slip mats or decals in the tub or shower.

Grab bars are essential to add both inside and directly out of the shower/tub.

Use a raised toilet seat or seat with armrests.

If you are unsteady on your feet in the shower make sure there is an elevated shower chair.

Stairs-

If carpeted- make sure carpet it a light colored, non-patterned carpet which will make it easier to see each step. If wooded- place non-slip grips on each step.

Install handrails on both sides of the stairs.

Make sure, at a MINIMUM, there are lights at the bottom and top of the stairs.
